Free home security checklist

Ten minutes, twelve checks. Tick them off on screen or print it out.

• Your Wi-Fi router's admin password has been changed from the one on the sticker (this is different from the Wi-Fi password).
• Your router is still getting updates from your provider. Very old routers should be replaced.
• Automatic updates are switched on for your computers. Windows 10 no longer gets free security updates, so check what you're running.
• Automatic updates are switched on for your phones and tablets.
• Your email has its own password that you don't use anywhere else.
• You use a password manager (or a written book kept safely at home), not the same password everywhere.
• 2-step verification is on for your email, bank, Facebook and Amazon.
• You've checked your email address at haveibeenpwned.com to see if it has appeared in a data leak.
• Windows Security (or your antivirus) is switched on and up to date.
• There are no remote access apps (AnyDesk, TeamViewer etc.) on your computer that you don't use or don't recognise.
• Smart cameras, doorbells and plugs have had their default passwords changed.
• At least one copy of your important photos and files is kept somewhere other than the device itself.
