Is this a scam?

Got a text, email, call or pop-up that doesn't feel right? Send me a screenshot and I'll tell you honestly whether it looks like a scam. It's free, with no obligation.

Never send me passwords, PINs, bank details or one-time codes. I will never ask for them.

Common scams right now

  • Delivery texts: "We missed your parcel, pay a small fee to rebook." Real couriers don't ask for card details by text.
  • Bank "safe account" calls: someone claiming to be your bank or the police asks you to move money. Your bank will never ask you to do this.
  • Fake tech support: a call or pop-up saying your computer has a virus, from "Microsoft", "BT" or "Amazon". They want to connect to your computer.
  • HMRC messages about a tax refund or a fine with a link to click.
  • "Hi Mum / Hi Dad" messages from a new number asking for money urgently.
  • Too-good-to-be-true deals and fake tickets on social media and marketplaces.
  • Investment or crypto adverts using celebrity photos.
  • QR codes stuck on car park signs that take you to a fake payment page.

Warning signs

  • It's urgent: "act now or your account will close".
  • It asks you to pay by bank transfer, gift cards or crypto.
  • It asks you to install an app like AnyDesk or TeamViewer.
  • It asks for a code that was just texted to you.
  • The link or email address is slightly wrong.
  • You weren't expecting it.

Already clicked, paid or let someone on your computer?

  1. Call your bank straight away. Dial 159 to reach most UK banks safely, or use the number on the back of your card.
  2. Change your passwords, starting with your email, and turn on 2-step verification.
  3. If someone connected to your computer: unplug it from the internet, switch it off, and don't use it for banking until it's been checked. I can check it for you.
  4. Report it to Report Fraud at reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040 (England, Wales and Northern Ireland). In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.
  5. Forward scam texts to 7726 (free) and scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.
